As we all know, there are few more pleasurable things in life than to hear the story of a person who believes he’s doing well, when actually he’s sliding into total disaster. Happily, Sean Dungan’s collection, Unwelcomeness, is chock full of such tales, in turns surprising, witty, and even sweet, most concluding with the satisfying thump of a bottom being hit. Make no mistake: despite the curmudgeonly title, this generous and useful manual of instruction is almost enough to make you long for hard times.

Sean Dungan’s gentle fiction weaves together the raw components of yarn spinning into amazing tales in which reader and storyteller meet in the wooly wilderness of the page, where animal and human face off, eyes bulging and suspicious. Mr. Dungan has deadpan comedic skills, a beautiful touch. His discrete delivery comes off as modest as tapwater but his sentences are distilled and delicious, i.e., smokey single malt scotch.
